MAY 15, 2006 WASHINGTON D.C.

ANGEL FLIGHT® AMERICA TO HONOR FRIENDS OF CHARITABLE AVIATION AT TRIBUTE BANQUET

Twenty-eight individuals, including members of Congress and representatives of corporations, the news media, airlines, philanthropic groups and government agencies will be honored at a special banquet in Washington, D.C., on May 15 for their significant contributions to the cause of charitable air transportation.

U.S. Representatives Robin Hayes of North Carolina and John Salazar of Colorado, both private pilots and friends of Angel Flight, are co-chairing the AFA Tribute Banquet, to be held at the Capitol Hill Hyatt Regency Hotel.  Interested parties may purchase tables or buy individual seats by calling Jody Thomas, the event coordinator, at 703-354-0501.  A VIP reception will be held at 6:15 p.m., with dinner served at 7:00 p.m.

After hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Angel Flight volunteer flew over 2,200 missions, airlifting the sick and injured to medical facilities, reuniting families torn apart by the disaster and relocating them to safe housing.  All of the major national television networks brought the Angel Flight story before the public during the hurricane disasters, showing the pilots’ compassionate service in transporting desperate individuals and families out of the stricken region.  The banquet will honor these pilots as well as the donors and friends who help make Angel Flight services possible every day.

Also receiving recognition will be members of Congress who have sponsored legislation to help the cause of charitable air transportation in the general aviation sector of civil aviation.  Other honorees are airline companies which donate free tickets to people in need, and foundations that contribute financially.

Those to be honored at the Angel Flight America Tribute Banquet include:

United States Congresswoman Thelma Drake (Virginia), United States Senator George Allen (Virginia), National Organization for Rare Disorders, American Red Cross, Lindquist and Vennum, P.L.L.P.,  Dr. Steve Groft, Director, Office of Rare Diseases, National Institutes of Health, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Signature Flight Support, Team Resni Motorsports,  The Hallmark Channel, New Piper Aircraft Company, Pioneer Services, Corporation for National and Community Service, National Business Aviation Association, United Way of America, American Airlines, Hogan Family Foundation, Delta Airlines, U.S. Airways, Raytheon Company,   University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Saab USA, Avfuel Corporation, Fox News,  National Broadcasting Company, Frontier Airlines, Alaska Airlines.

Ed Boyer, chairman of Angel Flight America’s board of directors and last year’s winner of the Commonwealth of Virginia Aviation Lifetime Achievement Award, notes the importance of recognizing those who have helped create the national charitable air transportation network.  “Without the help and sponsorship of key national corporations and philanthropic organizations, our task would be impossible.  We acknowledge and appreciate their partnership with us.”

ANGEL FLIGHT® AMERICA THANKFUL FOR HURRICANE KATRINA DISASTER RESPONSE VOLUNTEERS

Angel Flight volunteers and donors like you fill a critical gap in our nation's charitable structure. Ground and pilot volunteers donate their time, talents, and airplanes to ensure free transportation for children and adults in need of our services. Financial donations help cover the costs to coordinate our missions and reach as many patients as possible with our offering of hope and healing.

In order to avoid contribution to a fraudulent website, we ask that your donations be made to this site which is www.angelflightamerica.org or any of the regional links found on the About Us page.  The seven operating entities are Angel Flight Northeast, Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic, Angel Flight Southeast, Angel Flight South Central, Angel Flight Central, Angel Flight West, and Mercy Medical.

ADDISON, TX

(September 26, 2005)—

Angel Flight® America (AFA) has

been working non-stop in coordinating relief missions for Hurricane Katrina survivors.  Volunteer pilots within the national charitable aviation network have flown approximately 1200 missions helping over 2500 Hurricane Katrina survivors within the 30 days following the storm.

“We’ve put together many, many missions helping to reunite families and relocate people evacuated from areas that were flooded by Hurricane Katrina," said AFA leader Butch Smith. "We are extremely thankful for our volunteer pilots, staff and volunteer coordinators as well as the cooperation from other relief organizations.  Without these dedicated efforts, we would not have been able to service so many people in need."

Angel Flight America is a national organization dedicated to serving people in situations of compelling need by arranging free air transportation through volunteer general aviation pilots.

Angel Flight® is on the front line every day of the year helping children and adults in need access life-saving medical care. The national network of several regional charitable aviation organizations also arranges flights of compassion and disaster response.

The AFA mission coordination team has been working 24/7 covering all corners of the country and focusing their professional efforts, limited funds and volunteer pilot resources on requests to:

  • Reunite families separated during the evacuation
  • Relocate families out of shelters that have confirmed safe housing elsewhere.

Angel Flight America is a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt charitable organization giving hope wings daily to hundreds of people in need.  Last year alone nearly 17,000 missions were flown through Angel Flight America by generous volunteer pilots.
